I want to point out Steve’s slight eyebrow twitch and how he seems to be both stunned and trying his best to stay calm and steady in the face of this.
Steve is from an era when you just did NOT talk about suicide. It happened, but you NEVER acknowledged that it had happened.
To have Bruce say this, is like in the modern era standing- as an adult male, is like admitting you were sexually assaulted as a child to casual strangers you met earlier that day. It is horrifying and terrible and so socially taboo that it shocks people to the core of their being. That’s the level of taboo Steve is coming from.
Tony has sympathy and it breaks his heart- but for Steve this is an emotional and social BOMB. He can’t react because he doesn’t know HOW to react. Sure, he had heard when he was a little boy that when the market crashed, a few men jumped from buildings, but that was never mentioned more than once or twice, and never when he was supposed to hear it.
And Bruce is just admitting to it. To this shameful thing and Steve has never ever heard it said without a whisper. He really has NO cues on what isn’t going to make it worse for Bruce, so he clamps down on any reaction at all and makes a split second decision to just try an not react AT ALL.
